Do I really need an editor?

Every book on your shelf has been copy-edited and proofread, and before that the author will have worked with a developmental editor to bring out their full potential. Family, friends, and your own good eye can suffice for a Word document that sits on your computer, but if you want to publish writing to a wider readership, an editor will turn you from an enthusiast to a pro.

An editor is distanced from your work, and can spot your flaws and strengths objectively. They can tell you what needs work, and why, and can guide you with nuanced, actionable feedback. More than anything, an editor is qualified and experienced.

The best editor isn’t just someone who moves commas around for you; a good editor is your advisor, co-worker, sounding board, and cheerleader.
